A Focus On Nature

University Mammal Challenge

What mammal species live on your campus? How many are there? A Focus on Nature, in association with the Mammal Society, would love to know! We’re looking for teams of students from Universities across the UK to take part in surveying for mammals on their campus. Win prizes and contribute to UK mammal conservation by putting a team together and joining our first annual University Mammal Challenge.

Following the success of our Birdwatch and Moth challenges, UMAC will see teams of students will record as many mammals as possible between the 1st January and 30th June 2017. There are only three rules to consider when forming a team:

  • Team members must be a current student.
  • There may be no more than 5 members to a team, but a university may enter more than one team.
  • Team leaders must be a member of the Mammal Society.

Not a member? No problem. Participants can join the Mammal Society for the discounted price of £10 – that’s nearly 50% off the usual price! Discounted memberships are not listed on the Society’s joining page. For more information on how to take advantage of this offer and how to register teams, contact unichallenge@themammalsociety.org

Once you’ve signed-up, you’ll receive a Challenge pack, which will give all the details you need to get up-and-running. There may also be opportunities to work with local mammal groups and experts on additional surveys, and get experience of additional survey methods. And it’s a competition, so there will be prizes! (TBC)

To sign up, or for more information, contact unichallenge@themammalsociety.org. Teams must be submitted no later than Wednesday November 30th, 2016.
